Doing good is easy with these incredible organisations.

The best way to feel good is to do good, and the North East has plenty of opportunities for its residents to give back.

Whether you’re looking to support stray animals or give a struggling soul a hot meal, the charities of the North East are as varied as they are impressive, and we want to shine a light on four of the most inspiring.

Here are 4 North East charities you need to know about.

The People’s Kitchen

Founded single-handedly in 1985 by local resident Alison Kay, The People’s Kitchen had a team of 40 volunteers after just a year. Today, the organisation supports homeless and vulnerable people all over the region, offering hot meals and vital care every day of the week.

Better yet, the Kitchen is still run entirely on the work of volunteers and the generosity of donations, so every penny counts.

Children’s Cancer North

Around 101 children and young people are diagnosed with cancer every year in the North East. Children’s Cancer North fights to lower that figure, funding life-saving research, care, and support for young people and their families.

Through a series of events both at home and overseas, the charity has made a huge difference to the lives of many North East children. For every £1 raised, 58p goes to research projects, 14p to children and family support, 14p to raising funds, and 14p to running the charity itself.

Newcastle Dog and Cat Shelter

We all love our furry friends, and Newcastle Dog and Cat Shelter has been supporting, caring for, and rehoming animals in and around Newcastle since 1896. From lost and unwanted pets to those who have suffered neglect, abandonment, and abuse, the charity is dedicated to reuniting animals with loving owners, both old and new.

You can browse their listings of animals online, and donate to support their work. As well as the shelter itself, the charity also hosts events, meeting spaces, and runs charity shops.

FareShare North East

FareShare is an incredible organisation that both fights hunger and tackles food waste. The charity provides perfectly good surplus food to local community groups, in order to ensure that excess food goes to hungry people, rather than landfills.

In 2021 alone, FareShare delivered to 285 groups, providing enough food to make more than 4 million meals, and helping 34,000 people get access to the food they so desperately need.

We’ve only scratched the surface of the hardworking charities in our beloved region, operating tirelessly to ensure a better future. Visit their websites today to find out how you can donate or support their efforts.
