Life’s a beach, but that’s ok, because beaches are great. And we might be biased, but we think the North East has some of the most beautiful beaches in the country, or even the world.
From old favourites to hidden gems, we’re rolling up our trousers and hitting the sand because, with summer round the corner, it’s officially beach season.
To get you in the marintime mood, here are some of our favourite North East beaches.
Roker & Seaburn
How about we start with two beaches for the price of one? Roker and Seaburn have been firm favourites for those in Sunderland and the surrounding area for years, offering irresistable golden sands and winning the prestigious Blue Flag Award for beach excellence.
Long Sands, Tynemouth
A stunning stretch of beach sitting below one of the North East’s most popular hubs: Tynemouth Front Street. With local shops, plenty of pubs, and your choice of eatery all within walking distance, Long Sands is hard to resist.
Sandhaven, South Shields
Voted the UK’s best beach in 2022, you know Sandhaven has a lot to offer. If you’re looking for those perfect beach pics, South Shields is the place to be.
Beadnell Bay
Beadnell Bay is a wide, sandy beach nestled in a horseshoe shaped bay, just south of Beadnell village itself. It’s a unique, sweeping crescent that locals love.
Warkworth Beach
Looking for unspoilt views and miles of sand for paddling, running, or walking the dog? Look no further. Less than a mile from Warkworth village, this local beach has everything you need to unwind.
Bamburgh Beach
Like many of the North East’s popular towns and villages, Bamburgh has a host of pubs, restaurants, and local shops to explore. But without a doubt, the castle is what makes Bamburgh truly special. Take a visit to Bamburgh beach to see the spectacular ruins overlooking the shore.
Whitley Bay Links and Beach
Whitley Bay is full of cultural hotspots, from St Mary’s Island to the Spanish City to the thriving Links to the picturesque promenade. And whaddyou know, they’re all within stepping distance of Whitley Bay’s beautiful beach.
Marsden Beach
Pubgoers and restaurant lovers will breathe a sigh of relief once they’ve descended the (many) stairs to Marsden Beach, as the famous Grotto awaits. And if you turn your attention to the shoreline, you’ll see the breathtaking Marsden Rock standing proud.
Seaham Beach
Tranquility awaits at Seaham, with a pleasant stretch of rocky and sandy beach that’s perfect for walking your dog – or yourself! Better yet, there are plenty of rockpools and the beach is famous for being home to lots of beautiful sea glass.
Of course, we’ve only scratched the surface of the endless beaches that make the North East so special. Warmer, brighter days are ahead, so now is the perfect time to get out there and explore your favourite North East beaches yourself!
